Learning In Gaming

Quote: "Exploring. It is traditional that schools would teach students to move as fast and efficiently as possible towards a goal, but games are different. They encourage players to sit back, explore and not move on too quickly, think laterally not linearly, and to re-evaluate one’s goals on occasion."

Reflection: This quote stood out to me in more then just one way. I believe gaming is a time consuming activity, i'm not much of a gamer, but i do believe that games can help certain learning styles. For example, some people are visual learners where as a video games can give you visuals while you also try to solve the problems that lie in front of you. Video games and technology keep advancing as time passes, i believe in a matter of 5 to 10 years students will be learning through video game, because it allows you too explore different aspects of life and brings you close to reality through visual learning. Another good thing about video games, is that its not real life, if you make a major mistake it can be fixed unlike in the real world if something goes wrong its not as simple to fix the problem. I like the idea of learning through video games, i feel as if students would take more of an interest in learning, rather than just sitting around listening to someone lecture.

Media Literacy & Traditional literacy skills

Quote: Can students learn to recognize bias, track down sources, and cross-check information?

Reflection: If teachers are going to use media literacy they should be instructed on how to use the internet properly. Teachers must be able to understand and  facilitate through media literacy. If a teacher does not use proper steps in assuring correct data without copyright or plagiarism. If they choose to use someone else's work they must use proper citation's and attempt to teach the students the correct way of using information off the internet. If teachers do not use the proper steps, then how will a student be able to determine the correct way of citing information. Teacher's may not be aware of certain cites or whether those cites can be trusted or not. Therefore, teachers need to be sure they are using safe, reliable, and educational websites. Teachers should be able to come up with certain topics or activities that relate to the website they are using, students should be able to read it, learn about it, and reflect upon the topics.

How they relate:  This article talks about media literacy in a more collaborative way. It explains all the in's and out's and how it can be a positive way to learn.
